about

“Forgotten Outland is a short album released on the fabulous Resting Bell netlabel, inspired after a walk around disused farmland. The walk inspired the Paper Relics project with my brother Stuart first and foremost, but I came away with lots of ideas and wanted to do a solo release too. During the recording process for Voyage, I made lots of sketches and some of them turned out to be far too musical to use. Despite this, I continued to rework them over and over as I felt very fond of them and wanted to use them somehow. The more they were processed and re-arranged, the more worn out they sounded; the once hi-fi quality shrinking into a bed of hiss. Thinking back to the walk around the farm, with all of the rusting equipment, over-grown barns and dark dusty sheds I’d seen that day, I struck an idea that tied in with these recordings. They sounded as if they could have been uncovered from one of these dusty old sheds under a pile of rubble. I imagined how the worn out grooves of a vinyl record riddled with white dust would sound under a stylus. How it would force the melodies to sound tired, blurred and warped.”
