about

Spheruleus has recently released a collaborative album 5 years in the making (Folded Distance) which is themed around travel. This is with Josco on French label Eilean Recs which emerged on the day that Harry Towell had landed on the Amalfi Coast, Italy for his annual holiday.

Armed with just an iPhone Harry set about taking various recordings in and around the location as he familiarised himself with the area. Amongst many, these include the chimes of the various domes, cathedrals and churches along the coastline, holiday makers enjoying the sun by the shore and the buzz of restaurants in the evening. 'Trading Spaces' not only refers to the artist swapping the mundane British summer for the heat of Campania but is also a reference to the region itself, as the Amalfi coast has a long history of trading through the centuries.

This three track EP begins with 'Passo Longo' which is a deep and lulling drone created from a dissected and barely recognisable recording of a guitar and mandolin duo performing 'My Way' by Frank Sinatra at a restaurant in Maiori. It is accompanied by sounds from the beach and waves crashing against the ferry. Named after the production plants for a local speciality, 'Lemon Groves' is the more musical piece on 'Trading Spaces' with brief and refreshing acoustic guitar and zither looped over lo-fi field recordings from Southern Italy, along with subtle electronic beeps. The EP draws to its close with the longer 'Lunarossa' which opens to applause to the aforementioned restaurant musicians. Ambience from the restaurant and elsewhere in the region quietly adorn this brooding guitar drone. The title for this piece refers to a particularly red, full moon that appeared one night on the trip.

Spheruleus is busy working on a new album that's almost complete, but in the meantime you can enjoy 'Trading Spaces' and allow the essence of the artist's vacation to accompany your tea break.
